What to do?
Think of a song or group of sounds that remind you of a moment or place in your life.
Then record your own audio using the M audio recorders available for check out. You will combine these tracks together to create a “song” or “soundscape” of the above mentioned moment that you wish to capture. The purpose is to create a piece that communicates the specific moment or place without having to explain it to them in person.
When and how do I turn it in?
Have 2 minute (at least) playable .wav files ready for the beginning of class on Monday September 8th. We play the tracks in class.
Why am I having you do this?
The practical purpose of this assignment is to get you comfortable with our M-Audio recorders, and to introduce you to the Audacity layout. The conceptual purpose is tap into what certain aspects of music and sounds mean to you emotionally, and how we remember or recall or even create our memories.
Consider these points (we will go over some in class)
Capturing a place, what is place?
Where does sound come from, how do you hear it in relation to place?
Who does you brain process the sound?
Memory is selective…What do you choose to remember and what do you not? Is it a lot or a little?
What objects in this place or memory make sounds, can you recreate it
Abstract vs narrative emphasis
