1. Produce a stable and smooth picture. Hand held camera movement can create a chaotic and "real" effect if used correctly, otherwise it is distracting. Buy and use a tripod, or check one out. Brace your camera somewhere, on your knee or on a table. Use the steadicams we have. Also, see if your camera has an image stabilization feature to help lessen the shake.
2. Before shooting, compose your shots. Allow only for what is absolutely necessary to be in the shot. If there is too much extra junk in your viewfinder, move closer. Use the "Rule of Thirds", where you should always place your subject off center to create more dramatic compositions.
3. Lighting, one way to direct the eye of the viewer on a subject is through lighting, and is probably the single most useful element in making your videos seem a little more than amateurish. Do not shoot into the sun, shoot away from it.
4. Record Audio through a separate mic. If dialogue is important to your clip, you may want to run a separate microphone through your camera.
